Hi all.
I see that there have been a few more incidents of "lasing" of aircraft.

This is to be expected as "yoofs" think it is funny to (mis)use their £40 toy.
So because of the actions of a few people who should know better it ruins things for the rest of us. The authorities over in the UK are talking about banning not just pointers (again) but importing any laser device or even replacement optical modules as used in PS3 drives and Bluray players/writers.
Penalties could reach as high as two years in prison for possession of a "laser device" but the law is not clear to what extent laboratory lasers will be regulated.
This is putting legitimate research at risk and is a typical ConDem over-reaction to a very rare issue when simple licensing and severe punishment of genuine offenders would be a fairer alternative.
Discuss.

Why does is always happen this way? Are all such authorities really so blind to see what's actually fair and what isn't? Or is there something else going on here? .. ..

I think it also has to do with lasers being used (potentially) for making fake fingerprints... Also there are issues with them and CCTV, which is probably the real reason for the draconian penalties.
