Yes, the safety spark gaps had (probably) got overheated and bent down to short to the primaries, what you can't see in this photo' are the valves .. it's a sort of dual vttc. The ignition coil is (I think) part of the ignition circuit, using the adjustable spark gap behind the small coil on the right. The external parts not shown are two large rheostats, footswitch and workpiece. If I remember, Monday I'll post a photo of the front panel .... very Flash Gordon !
