does anyone know what those bicycle cables are called that have the black plastic and coiled metal sheath, then has a small diameter steel cable in the center.
i presume there are standard sizes and form factors ?

Is that the type used for changing gears or braking? And yes, they come in standard sizes, I think there are 4 or 5 major types of cable commonly available.

Patrick, be sure to note the critical difference in construction between cables to transmit substantial tension force (e.g. for braking) and cables to transmit precise displacements (e.g. for indexed shifting).
I don't know if the Bowden cable name includes flexible cables to transmit rotation, e.g for speedometers.

excellent points, ill remember them.
im trying to push and pull a rotating body, + and - 45 degrees.
