lets talk about ways to obtain 1 million volts dc. can it be produced without a marx? what about dual CCW multipliers? what sort of cool experiments can you do with a million volts?

On topic, it is very hard to reach a megavolt. Sources like multiplier stacks don't really like sourcing any current, and even if you had infinitely large capacitors and diodes you would have to do some serious engineering to eliminate corona (or use sheer brute force to overcome corona losses). You'd be looking at hundreds of dollars of diodes, thousands of dollars of potting epoxy, and a large number of capacitors.

A large Van de Graaff generator could do it too.
The following is taken from wikipedia:
The potential difference achieved in modern Van de Graaff generators can reach 5 megavolts.
The largest air-insulated Van de Graaff generator in the world, built by Dr. Van de Graaff in the 1930s, is now on permanent display at Boston's Museum of Science. With two conjoined 4.5 meter (15 foot) aluminium spheres standing on columns 22 feet (6.7 m) tall, this generator can often reach 2 MV (2 million volts).
Thus I would add the Van de Graaff generator to the list of 'suspects'. I assume the 5 MV generator is insulated with sulfur hexaflouride, which should be do-able for a serious hobbyist.
