Hello,

I am currently working on quite large project,
I need a ‘portable’ power supply which will output 500 - 1000w of power for a long-ish period of time,
I have looked at various batteries including Car batteries and Forklift truck batteries but I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas which might be a little bit more cost-effective or any other alternatives (Do motor homes use a specific type of power supply?),

Anyway, thank you for any information you can give.
(Sorry that it is not as exciting as other topics on this board)

A generator could also be a good power source but it depends on what you actually mean by "long-ish" runtime. You need to figure out what the actual energy you need is, which will narrow things down. It sounds like you're talking several kWh, which is a pretty hefty amount of batteries. Details about the load such as voltage and AC or DC will also narrow things down.

Car batteries aren't great for bulk energy storage since you're not supposed to cycle them deeply, and deep-cycle lead acid batteries are not exactly cheap or light.

Lithium laptop batteries. They will do 1C all day, and have nice capacity.

For 1kWh you're looking at around 140wh/kg after packaging and bms; say ~7 kgs.

My ebike pack has got 1kWh'r of lithium in it. But it handles 10C, so it's a tad heavier - 12 kg. (= 180 18650 cells, taken from power drills)

What kind of load?

.5-1 kw constant for extended periods of time(i.e. where hours is a good measurement) is to the point of where batteries definitely are becoming pricy, and that a generator would start becoming the best option.

A 1kw inverter generator runs in the $500-$1200 range, is handy to have for blackouts etc...

And $360 will get you a 4S (12.8v) LiFePO4 60 AH pack, ~20 pounds, 768 WH capacity, so not even an hour of runtime with 1kw of load.

A new "group 24" deep cycle battery runs ~$130-150, weighs ~50 lbs, and will be about the same capacity as the lithium battery above on a 1 hour discharge.

Cheap and dirty would be a 1000W conventional generator, I see a 2-stroke on amazon for $120, but obviously that would be buzzy, loud, and smoky.

If you want cheap, I say find a used 3-5 HP engine somewhere, and find a junkyard alternator for a big SUV or something that would come with a 80-100A alternator from the factory and bodge them together :p

For my backup power supply I use a 3HP 4 stroke with a 40A alternator which charges an old car battery (gust to filter the alternator's output and ofcours to start the filed coil) and that runs a 450w inverter
