I'm currently trying to build the pulsed flyback driver that jmartis2 (Dr.Dark Current) posted, and am having problems with planning and creating a suitable powersupply.

Schematic http://www.volny.cz/jmartis/qrv4_en_final.png

Currently, I have a heavy iron core power transformer that has a center tap for ground and two 28.7V not current limited. (Though checking the actual voltage on the power supply indicated that it was roughly 1.4V higher then the recorded without load in the following pictures below)

Would it be unsuitable to use multiple LM317 from a rectified and filtered for driving the driver due to the amount of power needed to be dissipated by LM317?

Or would there be a better solution to regulate the power for the driver using given transformer?

Hi there Hydralisk,

LM338 is a 5A version of LM317T, but if 5A is not enough, using LM317T with a pass transistor/s is the usual way to solve your problem.

If you Google for LM317T Pass transistor you will find plenty of circuit diagrams and constructional details.

I don't understand what you're getting at ... only the UC3844 needs a regulated supply, and it can take up to 30 volt so there doesn't need to be a large voltage drop across the regulator.

The supply going to the flyback primary doesn't need to be regulated at all, just needs a rectifier and a smoothing capacitor.

If the supply to the flyback does not need to be regulated, would this schematic be suffice?

As long as the jump above C1 becomes an intersection, sure :)

Oops, I just realised ... the 220 uF capacitor is off by a factor of around a 100, it needs to be much larger for a reasonable ripple at 8 amps average current draw.

Also the resistors for the LM317 are too small. The one that is 15 ohms should be 200, and the one that is 200 ohms should be 200*200/15.

Edit: Actually it might work, I've just never seen them as small as that smile

Corrected schematic

(Went with the 200ohm just to be on the safe side, according to Steve)
