I'm making a charger on a budget for someone, a bank that is. It will not have a big stud anti-parallel diode. I know for a fact, if I dont have one, and leave my charger/meter on it, if i short the caps out for anything like blowing stuff up, the feedback will just destroy it all.
So, Like many banks, im charging with a voltage quadrupler, it has never failed me before, and it will charge my 1KJ bank very quickly due to my decision of capacitor sizes on the quadrupler. The plan is to have a switch that disconnects the meter and charger, when your going to blow something up. So the capacitors, are on their own. Now, lets say you do that and have 70V or 0V on the bank. If you reconnect the quadrupler to the bank, the quad will still house the 450V, and you get a nice BANG. Now okay, i can add bleeders to the caps on there to bleed during the disconnect position, so the thing runs low. But of the main bank has power in it, and you reconnect, its going to make a pop and weld the contacts.
Is there any way to prevent this? Would a charge resistor in series with the bank and charger, prevent problems like that? If so, what size/wattage should I go after? I use no charge resistor for the fastest charge right now, as it only draws a couple amps due to the size of the quad's caps.
Just making a simple bank so the steps are
Charge the system Disconnect the monitors and charger fire it off Dis charge the main bank via resisstor (left over voltage) reconnect charger repeat.
Now if i must I'll put on a stud diode and not worry about it like any other bank. I just wanted to avoid that.
