I don't know if I'm going to do a coil gun project. If I did, what would it take to make a portable weapon that would be able to get a 4g mass up to 365 m/s. This is about the kinetic energy of a 9mm fired from a Glock. This is about 2600J.

A coilgun that can fire a projectile with a kinetic energy of 260J would require a massive capacitor bank, so it wouldn't really be portable.

I know it will be big, otherwise someone on this board probably would have made it. I was wondering how big. Small enough to fit in a back-pack?

I did a basic calculation using a 10uf cap bank. I would have to raise it to 22kv.

Depending on how efficient you can get the coilgun working, you may or may not be able to fit such a capacitor bank in a backpack.

I dont know if i would go within a meter of that thing, let alone wear it. 22kv at 10uf not only could kill instantly, it could jump 2cn to do so. Use a LOT of insulation!

450V id be fine with but even 1KV is pushing it for me...to carry on myself. And in the rare event a cap fails, better have some plating on your back if your going at that style.

Are you absolutely sure you want to hold something that has 22kV in it? I sure as hell wouldn't. And getting a projectile up to those kind of velocities is extremely difficult. At high speeds, it becomes very difficult to accurately time the coils. That's another thing, you'd need a LOT of coils. And even then, you would be lucky to get efficiency higher than 10%. So you'll need a cap bank with ten times the energy you want the projectile to have... It's simply not possible to make such a thing portable.

Does anyone know the spec on the military's rail gun? That is, does anyone know the efficiency of their system?
