After taking a week off because I couldn't get it to work, it's finished. I used this schematic minus the optional diodes and a TIP31C Transistor instead of an MPSA06: I also found that 8 turns on the pirmary gives the best result.
Finished result:
It easily lights two flourescent bulbs (4w and 13w) when powered by a 15v psu (I can even draw a small arc from the topload). It also works well with a 9v battery.
I have not coated the primary in anything yet, what's the best glue to use?

Yeah me too! If I get really close to the top load I do but it's only powerful enough to burn the outer layer of skin so I don't feel anything, the smell is quite terrible though.

How does it work exactly without any "feedback"?
Or am I missing something here. :p
Maybe you could get it to work better with a different base feedback? Squaring it up with a schmitt trigger or a comparator might help a bit with the heat. It'll keep the transistor out of the linear region.
