TVS reverse recovery time

Hi,
does anyone have an idea what would be the reverse recovery time of a TVS? We use them on the gates of power transistors in Tesla coils, switching very fast, but has anyone ever wondered about this? The datasheet doesn't say anything.

Well, you might use them, but I stopped years ago when I realised the popular 1.5KE series had more capacitance than the IGBT gates. smile

I now use ordinary zener diodes which have a much smaller junction.

Theyre pretty fast. ive seen numbers and been told theyre in the pico and nano second range, but as steve said capacitence can be a real killer and can skew any useful numbers. that may be why we dont see time quoted it text/datasheets too often.

Patrick, the numbers you quote are probably for the reaction time in the reverse direction, but I have never seen the reverse recovery time of the actual diode stated.
I measured the capacitance of a 12V 600W bidi TVS on my multimeter and it said 1.2nF. This is pretty good, but the recovery time is what bothers me.

Well that may be, they're special devices, if i remember right theyre minority carrier devices, so a Trr may not even be possible to really know to a useful extent.
