Optimal frequency in an induction heater

Having made a few breadboard zvs induction heaters and becoming hooked, now I would like to build something bigger. The most recent breadboard version used two igbts which ran at 111khz. The skin depth at this frequency is .2mm! I could heat aluminum and steel to painfull temperature rather quickly, but nothing glowed other than some strands of really thin steel wire. I drew 5A from 12v including a cooling fan. The heating was almost exclusively hysteresis loss because the wire wouldn't glow when held sideways.

But now for the bigger version, I am looking at some lclr/series resonant designs with igbt half bridges. I could easily figure out the desired frequency through the skin depth formula, but I would like to recieve some feedback. I look to melt some small al, cu, and fe objects in a small ceramic cup. Nothing thicker than 1.5 cm diameter for melting. What have other people used? I realize that the driver can lock to the resonant frequency of the tank based on the workpieces inductance, but what general range should I be shooting for?

Edit: on further horsing around with the zvs version I can say that it rides borderline current as I operate it with a smps that cuts out around 5 amps. Whenever the piece gets hot enough(in the red) the current trips even though current should reduce as it heats. Is this the currie threshold?

With a ferromagnetic work piece, the inductance should go down when the piece goes beyond it's curie temperature. With lower inductance the current draw should go up, which should explain what you were seeing.
