hehe, thanks, it was a ould backup powersupply for a block of flats, the last owner taken the battarys for his soler panels, i havent got any tubes to run on it saddly. its more of a "occupy time" project

I think he misread your intentions and thought you were making a regulated supply ... instead of just rectifying/smoothing the variac output.
I'd just use a triac to limit the AC current rather than a saturable reactor ... neither of those can limit the current from the DC smoothing capacitor though, which at 50/60 Hz has enough energy to do quite a bit of damage.
