I've been looking though George Royer's work and the 'ZVS' driver we all know and love is documented in none of it. In fact all of royer's circuits don't use a tank capacitor, but rather tickler coils like an Armstrong oscillator.
In fact, I can't find this circuit listed in any oscillator literature; it has no formal name.

Isn't that why we call it the Mazzilli or ZVS circuit?
Vladi Mazzilli referred to his own circuit as a "Royer" even though that is technically incorrect as you point out. The Royer and Jensen oscillators used tickler coils because they predate MOSFETs by about 20 years, and the diode feedback arrangement would be very inefficient with BJTs. Even if it worked, diodes cost about a week's wages back then.
To me, the ZVS has more in common with the Eccles-Jordan multivibrator than anything else.
