Gate Drive Transformer Question

I need to make a GDT that can switch a pair of small mosfets at 1.3-1.6MHz
I know there's lots of GDT design guides around but my question is, is if an E-core style transformer would work. I was looking through my box of ferrite cores and rings and found this little core here

I have read that the best core you can use is one with no gaps, and for the project I am doing this style transformer would make it look so much better compared to a ring core. It has no gap on the center peg so I was thinking if the core material can handle the frequency, (I realize the odds are most likely low) I might have a shot of making it work. I have to original bobbin so the windings would be nice and neat.

What are your thoughts?

Hi, yes EE/EI cores do work. Minimize the air gap by making sure the surfaces are clean, and use moderate force to clamp the cores together. I would do the winding with conductors from an UTP cable twisted together (3 or 5 conductors, depending if you want to make a half or a full bridge).

I would not suggest that you run your MOSFET gate drive transformer above 500 kHz. If you operate between 50 and 200 kHz, you will be more likely to produce a useable gate drive signal for your MOSFET, especially since you do not know the specific core material (or its maximum recommended useable frequency).

If you run a gate drive transformer beyond its useful frequency range, two things could potentially happen: 1) the MOSFETs may not turn on, or 2) the gate drive pulses may exhibit such poor rise times with respect to operating frequency that your MOSFETs will run inefficiently (and may heat up to the point of thermal runaway / failure).

If you run at a lower frequency, you will have the best chance of obtaining a reliable and useful gate drive transformer.

Well, I have no choice, I have to run at this frequency. It will be used for a small tesla coil, and the frequency is somewhere in that range. Haven't finished the secondary yet so I am unaware of the actual frequency.
