can someone explain what exactly an igbt halfbridge is? what are the advantages and disadvantages of other igbt switching methods. what makes it so good for use in a coilgun? thanks in advance, i am having trouble understanding it from online research alone

Well for coilgun use, using two igbts allows you to first switch the capacitor current into the coil, and then switch the coil energy back into the capacitor bank. It improves overall efficiency because you can regain some of the energy rather than dissipating it as heat.

forty: thanks, I have been keeping an eye on the thread for awhile. i am working on one similar and have just finished my charging and optical trigger setup. Im just trying to wrap my head around the half bridge switchin setup

if my igbt need to withstand approx 1000 amps for a few ms do you guys think i need to get a igbt brick? if i want an igbt halfbridge configuration i need 2 per stage correct?
