Just received a Cyonics Uniphase 2201RD-40MLA Argon laser from eBay. Nice bright sky blue beam which is nominally rated at 40mW. Draws 10A at 110V but can be turned down to about 5mW and draws 5A.
My $10 UK Army goggles block it almost completely.

TDU, I so have laser envy right now... ;D
But, I am always on the look-out for a krypton laser and a band chopper.

What mode is it?

It is a multiline laser with the main lines being blue 488nm and green 514.5nm.

The beam here is split with a 15000 lpi diffaction grating and the first order spectrum passed through fluorescein which filters it to green only.

I would like to filter it to the violet beam only. The violet line is the leftmost one but the colour doesn't reproduce well.

This was only AU $355 on eBay and I have seen one go for around $1500 a few years ago.

I used to have an 80mW argon-ion laser... purportedly came from a medicinal application.

Just watch out for all that beryllium oxide shrouded around the tube... if that shatters you're supposed to call a HAZMAT team.. probably enough BeO in each of these lasers to pollute a few cubic kilometres of air if you powdered it :-/

yours looks in very nice nick.. the umbilical cord on mine had been cut between the power supply and the laser, and I had to work out where everything went... about forty conductors, and not many of them power. d'oh. =P

According to Sam's FAQ, argon ion lasers have been used in printers, forensics, ophthalmology (I think my ophthalmologist uses one), holography and laser shows.
They are the original green laser before the DPSS ones came along and generally superseded them.

This is a pic out of my shed with a 10mW HeNe for comparison.

40mW should melt dark coloured plastic (e.g. electrical tape) and maybe just singe thin black paper, assuming the beam size is small (<2mm)
