Hello

I need your advice.
As described in previous posts I want to design and make device which would charge and discharge capacitor in the frequency of 200 discharges per second. To sum up I want to get device which would charge capacitor and if capacitor obtain appropriate voltage it will discharge its energy trough spark gap.

My concern is with power supply:

1) I have neon transformer 10kV 100mA but how to control power output to get appropriate frequency of discharges? Even If I control power for example through thyristor I suppose output 200 discharges will be modulated with 60Hz mains frequency. I think this will happen because of capacitor would be charged in different times: (look rectified high mains voltage) so I could get something like this: III I I I III I I I III (I represents spark gap discharge ;) )

2) Second solution is ignition coil + capacitor. In this way I could get energy of ignition coil to charge capacitor providing that El = Ec so I could switch primary by IGBT transistor . Knowing inductance of ignition coil I could get appropriate capacitor and then get these 200Hz discharges.

3) I could use voltage multiplier but this is problematic. I would have to adjust initial frequency from mains and than switch really fast mains by IGBT to obtain appropriate energy on output to discharge spark gap in appropriate time.

Please advise about the best method of producing regular capacitor discharges. I am interested how could I do this with neon transformer. I have it and I see problem with using it.
Maybe you will advise me using different power or ways supplies...

I am waiting for your solutions.

It would be much simpler if you can tolerate a pulse rate of 120 per second, synchronized to the mains frequency.
Or 240 per second, with less energy, and probably alternating between two different energies.
If 200 pps is the requirement, IMHO it will be easier to manage if synchronized to the exact harmonic (5 pulses for every 3 half-cycles of mains voltage). But won't have have a cool, audible beat frequency.

There are some very simple and inexpensive phase-locked-loop solutions, with adjustable phase. You could practice by making very-small-energy discharges in a xenon flashlamp, and use it as a stroboscope to observe a synchronous motor.

You could use the same scheme as a TC using a rotary spark gap
(or thyratron or triggered spark gap).

Full-wave rectify the NST output for c7kV dc,
center-tap=0v, diode(s) from each NST 'hot' output to a dc 'resrvoir' capacitor

Using 'resonant charging' (series inductor and diode(s) )
would give about 14kV across your 50nF capacitor (c5 Joules)

Use an asynchronous rotary spark gap for desired discharge repetition rate.

Yes at first I thought I will use triggered spar gap. But ignition coil which is triggering it is giving long lasting spark. So you also have to use small capacitor to ignition coil to make spark sharper and short lasting.
