I got my self a 400w mitsubishi 3 phase VFD for free, but sadly my house doesn't run on 3 phase power will it work if i just feed in 1 phase? and is it possible to convert 1 phase to 3 phase easily? the model # is FR-A024-0.4K

I have a couple of these Mitsubishi units and they run just fine on single phase 230 volt 60 Hz by connecting to the U1 and U2 terminals. Study your unit.
The 3 phase lines probably go to a 3 phase bridge, and is converted to DC to run the unit. The rule of thumb for things made to run on single phase power that were designed for 3 phase is derate the kilowatt output by 58%.
Did you get the manual? Those units are tricky with regards torque/speed/ ramping rate etc.
Any load, except a motor will give you nothing but trouble. They also are very unforgiving of shorts and assorted flashes, etc, despite their overload foldback.

ok I connected 220v hot to phase 1 and neutral to phase 2 ground to ground, and I barely get any voltage across the output and ground. certainly not 220v when i tested it with a 220v lamp.

Like Radiotech says, it probably won't do anything until it's connected to a 3 phase induction motor. But at least the display should light up and show some sort of error message.
Also, in North America, any voltage between any domestic line and "neutral" is 110V. You need the two hots.

oh i connected it through a 110 to 220v transformer. so it can't even control a 1 phase induction motor?
