(this is the kind of crap i wake up thinking about) I've made quite a few transformer windings, tesla coil secondaries, coilgun coils, and inductors. When winding a tesla coil secondary I've heard that if one strand overlaps a previous one then those two strands act as if they weren't there (or "shorted.") At the end of every layer of a coilgun coil or transformer winding the wire must obviously overlap previous turns (when winding left to right, then R->L, then L->R, and so on.) When winding a high voltage pancake coil or electromagnet with very thin wire, it's seemingly impossible to avoid overlapping previous turns in each layer.
So i'm wondering what exactly is the effect of crossed turns in a TC secondary, are those effects applicable to other windings, and what, if any, is the benefit of perfectly layered transformer windings other than compactness?

A single overlapped winding nor even several of them aren't going to compromise a tesla coil in any other way apart from looks.
A severe overlap involving many turns, along with the coil being driven very hard might result in breakdown in the particular place and secondary fire. But in most cases it's just going to be an annoyance , sticking out an looking ugly.

On thing from the ham radio side concerning radio frequency coils, depending on their winding method, sometimes they may possess resonances not predicted by their rated inductance.
These screwball anomalies are often found on one frequency band but not on others so the makers of ham grade parts take care with this issue.
Trouble starts when some spare parts from something else are put in.
If you were winding L-R and then a fold happened to make a few turns R-L, those turns would be anti-inductive, not necessarily a short, just an anti phase section.
