I've now ACTUALLY got an ignition coil.

It has a 2N3055 Transistor on it, so I thick it's current limited also.

Can I drive it with ZVS?

I think you could. Hints - use a 10-20uF motor run cap for the tank cap, and two PFC chokes from old PC power supplies.

Wouldn't a conventional ZVS driver require center tapped primary? Doesn't seem like it could work to me.

BTW Platinum, out of interest, are you welsh?

Yes, I guess you have seen the Welsh writing.

I've tried using ZVS, 6+6 on a flyback core, and 6 turns out, no output, is the frequency too high?

I opened the case of the driver, there was a few resistors, voltage regulator, a 555 and 2N3055, I drove it with 19v 3.25a and it's was very low output..

Don't think the ZVS will drive it..

Nope, instead of one inductor and a center tapped primary, two inductors can be used going to drain of each mosfet.

The real problem is that the drive frequency will have to be quite low, few kHz at most, so inductors will need to be high inductance and current rating (PFC chokes are what first falls on my mind, although I'm not even sure if their inductance is enough!

I might try it once I get time.

Yes it is - and even if you could figure out what I'm talking about, I bet you'll still have too hard time finding the required inductors.

Now it's the time to pull out your HV mosfets along with a NE555 I guess!

with the oil-can type of transformer you're kinda stuck at 5-8 kHZ and with only a "I" core you'll have magnitising currents equal to the drive current. he could do as Dr. pork suggests, which should work for ther single primary. Or take off those ZVS training wheels and go for a real IC driver, with a half bridge or single transistor drive.

these oil-can types are good for people to learn with, easy to get working. but i prefer the HEI/TFI types.

So I need two HF inductors, aircored are way to high as they are in Radio range, I'll have a look.

Wouldn't need to add a bigger capacitor, because the lower the capacitance the high the frequency (because the less it has to charge it up, and discharge it?) and higher capacitance3 means it has lower frequency.

AHAHAH

Guess what Dr. Pork I got it working!

I added two random inductors to the two 0v output's of the ZVS, tied them together put that on 0v rail of coil and + to the + rail of the coil, and outout is quite low, mainly because of the high frequency. 8~KV. So the 2 0v outputs of ZVS go through another inductor to the 0v iggy coil rail.

Can't get the right inductor. ¬¬

Honestly, I have no idea what your "0v" outputs are, but it still looks wired wrong nevertheless.

The idea is to simply replace the flyback primary with the ignition coil primary. Normally, you would have an inductor going from your positive supply to a center tap, but you don't have a center tap on the ignition coil, so all you need is split that inductor in two, going to each side of the primary. Can't get simpler.

Marko

PS. if you have two small (few tens of VA) identical transformers laying around, you can short their 230V primaries and use secondaries as (fairly inefficient) inductors.

Zvs don't work anymore. Nice waste of £30.

...:(

Right MOSFET gets warm.
