I am looking for ideas. alot of old radios used to use thease tubes in old radios. I basicly know how to use thease tubes so I'm kooking to see if any body has tried this. I sapose one could use a sweep generator and a detector diode and a op-amp to drive it

In uk we call them 'magic eye' tubes and they are just a non-linear un-calibrated voltmeter so anything (that can be converted to a voltage) can be 'tuned' e.g. error signal in a pll, grid-dip type meter, I think a sweep generator / ac signal could be fed directly to the eye tube but a detector would give a brighter steadier display.

typicaly I use a pulse generator and o-scope wich probibly tell me what I would want to know but it would be nice to have something portible and magic eye tubes have a cool look. I would like to be able to sweep a tesla fully built and see the upper pole and lower pole or resonant peak. I might add a frequency counter so I mark the frequencys. thanks for the help.

thanks radiotech, I found this website and a couple others
that I'm looking for. I started this thread to find some good things to measure in a Tesla. right now I am working on a CM300 DRSSTC and I'd like to see things like frequency drift or primary current when a spark is being generated. I just think they look cool and would make a good visual addition. when I get a chance to do this project I will revive this thread when I find out to measure and implement.
