To get the festive season off to a start, I decided to fix this beast. I was fed up of tripping over its partly dismantled carcass in the hall.
The main problem was that a lot of green resistors had gone high or open circuit. Most of them were in the log converter, which completely randomised the display. There was also a leaky electrolytic in the power supply's voltage reference, dragging all of the rails down.
The (analog) storage hadn't worked for so long that there was a vintage Dymo tape label on the control panel, saying "No Storage". Having never seen an analog storage CRT before, I was determined to fix that. It turned out that one of the connections to the CRT was bad.
All of the schematics and service manuals were found at the Boat Anchor Manuals Archive, bama.edebris.com.
Now all I need to do is find a use for it! The RF section has a range of 0-110MHz and that doesn't cover a lot nowadays. I am somewhat spoilt as I have access to a 9kHz-1.5GHz one at work.
The bad parts
Whee.
Part of the calibration procedure. Multiple traces are overlaid with the storage capability, trimpots are twiddled until the spacing between them is one division. (That wasn't quite done yet.)

Yep, I'm pretty sure that would work. It also has an 0-11MHz range, I tried that with an audio signal generator, and it can resolve a 10kHz signal, so a Tesla coil should be doable.
I also got the 8443A tracking generator, so it might be possible to use that with the analyser to draw out the frequency response of a coil system, as long as it's above 100kHz. The generator won't go any lower even if the analyser does.
