I recently see the rumor that Playstation is in fact a good CD player on the Internet. Some people said that only one specific model(SCPH-1001)will work and others will sound like trash.Others said SCPH-3500 or other are the same.I want to buy a CD player and my budget is tight. so I'm interested in this rumor.
Are there any science fact behind these claims ?
I found two older versions of playstation on a local auction site. One is SCPH-3500,another is SCPH-1001. The SCPH-3500 is much cheaper(each of them are cheaper than 33 USD).Which one should I buy?

Nothing sounds better than a purpose made cd-player. Forget this playstation crap, u'd need much the same stuff to play cds as to run burned games, such as swapmagic and exploited memory cards, modchips etc.

According to Stereophile:
The SCPH-1001 is the one to get, as the others don't have RCA output jacks, and have a different DAC chip. You can play audio CDs using the buttons on the controller.
Looking at John Atkinson's measurements, I suspect it would sound about as good as any other CD player you could get from a charity shop for $30
