I want to make a 12v psu from a toroidal core, quite small (rated around 200W) I think it's iron powder but it came from a 15khz PSU. What do I need to do firstly to the core, then I have a 6A single phase rectifier, and some caps, only thing I'm confused with is the ratios, do I wind 240 turns and then 20 odd turn and regulate to 12v?

Bear in mind that the LM7812 will be good to an amp or so on the base design. For the cost of a beefier output stage, I recommend you to buy an ATX computer PSU (the cheapest one you find) and use it as a power source. They give +3.3, +5, and +12v and are short circuit proof.
Or, take the hard route and get a 12v transformer, rectify it, filter capacitor, and several LM7812 with current sharing resistors, just as if one were sharing current among multiple bipolar transistors.

Or you could screw all that, get a 30 volt transformer, an LM317, and a nice sized bypass transistor and simplify your design; Not to mention variable output.
