one turn primary

i saw a flyback one time in a book or magazine that had one turn primary. Would this at all work? I am think a IGBT running at 1khz with 50uf cap+ 800v primary

Are you sure they were not using it as feedback winding? I think 1 turn would short the power supply.

I have used one turn primaries before for small power supplies. as long as you do the math your fine, remember volts per turn, and average out equal volt-seconds in positive and negative displacement, otherwise youll walk towards saturation.

In your example, you wont get anywhere near 800 volts per turn. maybe 8 to 30 volts per turn. and you wont even get that high at 1kHz, (youll need at least 50-75kHz as im guessing or much more).

i have a special ferrite planar transformer im developing right now, im hoping for 11 volts per turn, with one or two turns on the primary. ( therefore my primary voltage will be 11 or 5.5 volts.)

Two things ive learned, first you need as wide a cross section of ferite as you can get. second, you need a relativly high freq of switching. both of these tend to drive you toward a higher volt per turn value.

Though it is probably a feedback winding, or a heater winding for the CRT elements, and thus not a real primary.

This was for a single shot. they had a capacitor discharging into the single turn

Youre right thats what i was trying to think of.

I dont think a cap discharge make muchsense though given flybacks magnetic properties.
