What determines the power output of a laser diode?

I know there are "power ratings" for different laser diodes; yet, they're all in the same package...how is this so?

Is it possible to run a lower wattage laser to a higher wattage to achieve more power?

Laser diodes suffer from catastrophic optical destruction; past a certain point, the power density at the facet is enough to destroy it.

What do you mean the same package? ... they come in 3.8mm cans, 5.6, 9mm, C-mounts, F-mounts, bricks..etc the list goes on.

+1... Laser diodes are temperamental little beasts that will die if you look at them wrong. Besides hitting the optical damage threshold, you can kill them from plain overheating.

The packages might all be the same, but the thermal resistance from the part of the chip where the heat is generated, to the can, will be different.

Is the kind of answer I was wondering....

Since *most* laser diodes are in a TO-18 can, it seemed to me that they all ought to be rated the same; But, as Steve said, they have different thermal resistance to the actual can... too much power, and the heat just can't escape quickly enough.

How big of a heatsink does a 200 mW laser diode need? I have a small press on finned one I'm going to attempt to use, and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll try drilling one out of aluminum.
