hi,
just made my first transformer, but wondered about something. i first wound the primary with #18 enameled wire over one side of a ferrite frame, then wound the secondary with # 30 enameled wire straight over the top of the primary. now that worked perfecly, but i now need to make a new one, with a bigger secondary. would it work the same if i wound the secondary first, then primary over the top? (which would be easyer, due to the center tap making a massive bulge over the top of the primary winding.)

I'm not sure if it theoretically matters which coil is inside the other, but i tried with the primary on the outside once and it just didn't work very well for the zvs. for that reason i'd say just put the primary on the inside. to work around the big bulges of the thick wire (and to provide some extra insulation) just wrap a couple layers of transparency film over top the primary and tape/glue it down. That will provide a nice smooth surface to put your secondary onto. if you were then to put another layer of transparency film down, but not glue it to the first, you could make a removable secondary form so that you could slide on different sets of secondary windings.
