Well yesterday my friend gave me his old HP Pavilion dv6000 (It's running Vista) so I turned it into an Ipad, except the laptop isn't a touch screen so it's basically just a glorified computer monitor at the moment :( Anyone have any idea what I can use for a touch screen? Arduino?
Also, I tested it numerous times and everything worked perfectly until sometime after I mounted the LCD screen... Now, the on/off button doesn't work, instead I have to touch the button right next to the word "quickplay" in order to turn it on (this seems very strange to me). Further more, the speakers do not play any sounds and neither do the headphones (it all worked before). Except that when I go into the control panel and into the audio devices thing I and hit "test headphones" then I hear sound. Otherwise, nothing. Any ideas? I checked for shorts but it all looked ok.

Having had a dv6000 with that same issue, I may know what the problem is. The power button as well as the audio for the speakers use the same ribbon cable. Mine broke so the power button didn't function, when I took it apart I decided it wasn't worth reinstalling... only to realize I had no audio in the end. I guess my only suggestion is to check that cable.
As for the headphones, I believe they are listed as a separate "device". Depending on whether you have XP, Windows Vista or what have you... will determine how to set that output or audio endpoint as default for all programs.
you can get a touch overlay or touch retrofit although most will be resistive.
if you did break a flex cable you could use wirewrap wire or some old school style ribbon cable and solder directly to the boards. you might have to chase traces to larger pads if the FFC connectors have superfine pitches.

Oh nice acrylic work! Oh and I found this while browsing... I think this might be a cheap and maybe effective alternative to a touch screen. Especially since I still have the webcam connected
