Hi!
I've been experimenting with different switching methods for a multistage coilgun, and I've come up with an idea I think might work. But I'd like you guys to take a look at since I don't exactly trust my own skills when it comes to electronics! And it'd be a shame to build it, only to see it not function.
So yeah, this is the circuit diagram. There's two coils. Sensor 1 is placed a few cm before the entrance of the coil, sensor 2 is placed RIGHT at the entrance of the coil. As the projectile moves towards the coil, this will happen: No sensors triggered: No current flows. Sensor 1 triggered: IGBT and coil-specific SCR turns on, letting current flow to coil. Sensor 1 and 2 triggered: IGBT and coil-specific SCR still turned on. Sensor 2 triggered: IGBT turned on, SCR turned off (but current still flows) No sensors triggered (projectile in center of coil): IGBT turns off, stopping all current to coil.
I think the idea is pretty neat, but I'm simply not sure if the circuit would work the way it is now. I tried simulating it in the Circuit Simulator Applet, but it doesn't seem like it likes to have a transistor and SCR in series. The SCR acted very weird!

Wow what a difficult circuit to understand how it works, everything has to be floating so all those 4 earths cannot be connected together, or to any side of the coil power supply, likewise neither can any of the + of the batteries, which at 1.5v I suspect is not enough to turn the igbt on, perhaps try 9v batteries.

Thank you for the reply! I am unsure what you mean with "floating", but I suppose I can read up on that. But I don't really understand why I cannot connect the four voltage sources. As far as I can see, connecting them would not mess up which SCRs are triggered.
EDIT: I am sorry if the diagram is very hard to understand. I'm sure it could have been drawn to be more intuitive, but I'm not very good at making them :)
