I am lookin for a circute diagram for the quickest firing, most reliable optical switch for a multi stage coilgun.

All kinds of semiconductor switches are pretty fast. You could use the design I proposed in this thread:

Depending on how much control you want of when to fire the coils, you could drop the second sensors. with a single sensor, the coil will fire just when the projectile enters it, and stop when it's in the middle. With two sensors, you can control how far away rfom the coil the projectile will be before it fires, but it will continue until the projectile is in the middle. I'm sure there's simpler circuits out there that would fit you just fine, do a little googling :)
