Hey all. I have around 17.6 mF of capacitance available to me, at 350 volts.... That equates to roughly 1 kJ of energy.
I know that with coin shrinkers, you want the fastest rise time possible; meaning, I should probably series as many of my capacitors together as possible, correct?
I've got two RIFA 3300 uF caps rated at 400 VDC.... But then, I have 5 BC 2200 uF caps rated at 350 vDC.
All of these added together equals the 17.6 mF of capacitance. But, since they're different capacitors, how should I go about connecting them up for maximum effectiveness?
Also, about the wire for shrinking, I'd need to use relatively thick stuff right? 14 gauge wire would work?
For the switch, I'm thinking something like a Hammer of Thor. Get a big sledgehammer, put an aluminum plate on the head, and have another aluminum plate, as the contactor switch. Maybe some sort of wedge like thing?
As for the charger, I'd need to make something that could give out a decent amount of voltage.... I was thinking a flyback based charger, since the number of turns plays less of a role in output voltage. Though the charging time would be horrendous...

No matter how you arrange your capacitors: coin shrinking doesnt work with electrolytics. It requires both rapid rise time and high peak currents which are impossible to obtain with high ESR/ESL capacitor stacks like electrolytics are.
Good example is my experimental 5kJ lytic bank which can barely dent beer can. Compare that to real low impedance pulse cap which tears beer can in half with just 600 joules.

I don't know about that kizmo. I haven't tried to shrink any coins with my lytic bank yet, but I've completely smashed aluminum platters to a crumpled mess with my pancake coil.
3.7kJ launched a hockey ball 100 yards up and 100 yards far.

We'd love to hear and see more about your pancake-coil-based launcher. Seriously -- no sarcasm is intended. Ever measure or calculate the time scale of the discharges? Every try crushing a beverage can using your cap bank? (directly, in a magneforming process)
My can crushing experience is consistent with Kizmo's high voltage case. Discharge pulse width is on the order of 25 microseconds. I've long wanted to optically measure how fast the can metal moves.
