IS this just an artifact of the simulator?

It ups the voltage a little bit... I can't figure out why though. Using PNP, you get negative voltage output. Using NPN, you get positive.

Simple, the transistor acts as a diode together with the capacitor, the polarity of the transistot(npn vs pnp) is like which way round the diode is placed.

Btw falstad is not a circuit simulator, its only a demonstrator and should not be taken with any kind of seriousness. If you wanna do real trustworthy simulations you better get a competent simulation software package such as LTspice from linear technology which is free for download, and widely used in the audio electronics design community like diyaudio.com

LTspice is about as trushworthy, accurate and good as a simulation proggy can get before u start paying money for one.

LTspice is just as trustworthy, accurate, and good as the other general-purpose simulation programs, including the ones you pay for, seeing as most of them run off the same simulation backend (SPICE).
Sadly, the same cannot be said of LTspice's interface...
