Madsbarnkob and I got in a little argument in the chat room, and I was wondering, do mots typically have more copper or more aluminum based primaries? Out of every MOT I've ever encountered before, they all had aluminum ones (except for one, which seems to be an actually decently made one). The secondaries for all of the mots I've encountered are copper, except for one of them which had an aluminum secondary.

Thanks!

That depends on the age and make of the mot really, Ive had them far and between.
Some of the newer MOs ive ripped open (09-2011) have mostly had alluminum primaries, but older ones are almost always copper. I guess the reasoning is for due to aluminum bieng cheaper?

As for secondaries, Ive never seen anything but copper.

So on the contrary, I have very little aluminum primaries, and more copper ones, besides, its nice to get ahold of the older ones, they are larger and more robustly built.

almost all the MOTs ive seen are copper electroflashed aluminum, so you cant solder the buggers if you damage the copper.

All the 30+ MOTs that I have seems to be with copper primaries, could it have something to do with it being 230 Volt rated?

electroflashed aluminum, is this just on the ends or the entire wire?

if you cut open the primaries i think youll see their mostly aluminum coated with ultra thin copper for soldering purposes, the 10 plus mots i have seen were all this way, except for one which im not certain is a MOT but perhaps a well made 2 kv convetional transformer.

This primary is clearly ultra thin copper plated on aluminum wire.

Solder blobs, the copper was uniform across the whole length of the strand... as would be expected.

I guess all mine are with aluminum primaries too, I must admit I only judged this on their outer appearance.

Inducktion, you were right, my apologies for being so sure on the copper without really knowing ;)

Well, then, I have a relatively rare copper (yes, I've scraped and scraped) primary mot! And, mads, it's okay. :)
