Recently my electronics teacher acquired a decommissioned Motorola tape drive server (he knows some people:P)

We used some of the parts for a robot we're building to take the attendance down to the main office. It's going to be pretty neat! ^^

When we got the parts we needed for the robot, he basically said "Have at it" and thus we did.

I got quite a few nice things;

The Pile of stuff I got!

Link2

An ATX PSU with some very odd connectors... ( 3.3 volts at 25 A, 5 volt at 40 A, 12 volt at 16 A, -12 volt at 1 A)

Link2

A nice little SMPS with a molex connector! (12 volts at 5 amps, and 5 volts at 10 amps)

Link2

A large induction fan, (20 watts at 115 volts in, it's got amazing bearings)

Link2

A 24 - 30 volt 4.5 amp SMPS...

Link2

Another SMPS, +5 volts at 3 amps, and -5 volts at 2.5 amps... (it's nice and small!)

Link2

A nice solenoid..

Link2

A Supercap, .22 farad at 5.5 volts! (I think it was for memory storage...)

Link2

A nice sized pancake 3 phase motor....

Link2

And the rest is basically just fans, a rocker switch, and some heatsinks (a friend of mine was destroying one, so I took them graciously...Apparently they were actually using IRFP450's in them!) I also got two tapes, 800 GB each!

I had a similar situation a couple years back. I made a wall out of the fans and powered them all up with a supply, and quite a storm they created!

Nice haul, but I gotta bust your bubble regarding the supercapacitor, Link2

:P

Be sure to look up the numbers on any to-247 packages in the SMPS- I found some 100V schottky diodes in the server supplies I had at.

We were buying big server supplies for an equivalent of ~$8 a piece. They were 1-2 kW units, almost like new. I disassembled one, the active PFC had 4 IRFP460 in parallel and the inverter had 4 IRFP450s. There was a sh*tload of power diodes, like 30 diodes in one supply. Also a lot of heatsinks, inductors and Nippon chemi-con capacitors. I have 4 more units including a 5.1volt 300amp one.

I dismantled the ATX PSU, and got a bunch of nice toroids and various semiconductors. Though, I'm wondering if the PFC board is of any use to me? (it outputs 370 vDC! Plus, it doesn't have any control inputs, it's just plug and play)

Could I probably use it as a voltage doubler or something along those lines for other things, like induction heaters... flyback drivers, etc... and if so, should I upgrade the heatsinks for the IRFP460 and the schottky diode that's on the board?
