I disassembled at least 8 CD-RW and DVD-RW burner and finally get a working laser diode. I attached a lens from a cheap 5mW laser module to it and power it at 3V 320mA.But I cannot see a visible beam like those youtube videos.I even cannot see the beam even at almost complete darkness. Why?

I haven't try to light a match yet.But I guess the laser output is at least 100mW (3*0.33=0.99,almost 1W electric power input)Why I cannot get a visible beam at this power?

I'm guessing that you gave the laser diode too much power and it broke. Laser diodes can overheat and break very quickly when not mounted on a big heatsink.

It could well be running <100mw. 660nm itself isn't too visable to your eye, for myself I need at least 200mw in total darkness to see the beam.

Those current readings seem reasonable for a 20X/22X (for example, LPC-815, that has a Vfwd of 2.5V-3V, Ive seen them run in the higher limits of 400ma)

Got some pictures of the diode, sled and maybe drive it came out of?

Another thing is you could have cause damage to the diode in some way (with how fragile they are, there is a lot of factors). Jnbrex stated, you definatly need a proper heatsink, a bare diode will crap out in seconds without one.

I know laser diodes can overheat easily, but I cannot find a suitable heatsink. So I only turn it on for several seconds. When I found the casing is hot,I turn it off.

I cannot find any laser diode here in Taiwan at reasonable price.(But there are a lot of high power green laser pointer)

Its too late by that point, the damage has been done.
Guess how I found that out frown 30mW blue 405 HD-DVD, toast.
Seems that excess heat accelerates degradation of the facet making COD that much more likely and even more so if the can has been removed as some people do if the window is cracked during removal.

405 burner diodes seem to be a bit more robust, mine got literally too hot to touch numerous times and no apparent loss of power or facet damage.
I even reverse bias pulsed a shorted one to unfry it and it recovered 3% power (!)

If it's hot on the outside, the inside is toast
