It is a radio signal having a characteristic that matches Thomson scattering caused by an atmospheric
nuclear weapon shot.

The emp guns are pulsed microwave director arrays rumored to be able to
interfere with auto ignition

The evil genius books, if they are the one's I think you are referring to ("Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius" [part 1 or 2], by Bob Ianni by chance?) should have a description of EMP itself (though maybe you only have one of the two books, whereas both have a different EMP devices), and then also Google is your friend in this matter.

Fascinating subject, but difficult to grasp just how it really works.

I would try to explain more but Im probably just not the best, but are the books I mentioned by Bob Ianni the ones you have by chance?

Isn't it j use a directed electromagnetic pulse that induces current in any electrical device and just generally stuffs it up? I know that if you put a caculator to near to a firing coil gun it won't work (tried this myself).

seems to work even better if it's just an arc. My computer mouse would think it was disconnected from the computer every time i drew flyback arcs a few feet away from it. eventually it fried and began sending a double or triple click signal every time the buttons were pressed.

I think the key to a long range directed emp is a properly designed antenna and a wave guide. The antenna emits the emp radially outward and the wave guide redirects the 'backward' portion of it towards the target.

If you've ever heard electrical interference (from arcs, cell phones, etc.) being picked up by speakers, that's basically the same effect, except that you put a lot more energy into that signal so that it causes permanent damage to sensitive electronic components (as i did to my mouse.)

pulsing a magnetron as if it were a spark gap tesla coil might be a start, although only do it in theory or very carefully, as it may send some bad radiation out your way.
