I need a cap charger. Tried using MOTs but they are teh suckorz big time; saturate, get hot, etc...
I still have those big ol' xrt cores, and I started to make a low voltage transformer with the intent of powering a ZVS + HF transformer to do the job. But then I realized, well that big hunky contraption would be teh suckorz as well.
So now I am thinking... would it be worth the effort to use that 26ga wire to make myself an MOT that doesn't blow? At .41V/turn on that huge core, I could really push some mean power through it! There'd be no mosfets to explode, and if I need more voltage a FW doubler with MOCs ought to work quite nicely. Hell, I could use the bank caps as part of the doubler...

To get 2.7kVp out at a V/turn of .41Vrms I'd need 4,655T.
Might need to use 28awg for that one and run at .5V/T. Core is 2sqin CSA, laminated iron.

4655 turns is a lot to wind by hand, and since you'll want to have the winding window full in the end, it's hard to calculate exactly what size wire to use (well, it's not hard to calculate, but hard to have it work out properly in practice.) Maybe finding or winding a lower voltage transformer and using a voltage multiplier would be a better idea.

Well, the core weighs about the same as an MOT's core, but since it wouldn't be running in saturation I could probably push 2kW through it, (not continuous duty of course).
I just want something that will charge my caps fast and work every time I plug it in. The last thing I need is mosfets exploding when I want to explode something else...
I wound one layer and measured the voltage it gave: 87V @ 4.1V/T. Didn't clamp the core so it was loud as hell, but still accurate.
By that number, interlayer insulation wouldn't need to be much, if anything at all. I'd need 21 layers, which ought to be doable...
