I got a few of these nice high voltage capacitors:
1318499092 1938 FT0 Dsc 0151 1318499093 1938 FT0 Dsc 0155 1318499093 1938 FT0 Dsc 0156 1318499093 1938 FT0 Dsc 0157 1318499093 1938 FT0 Dsc 0158 1318499093 1938 FT0 Dsc 0159

10x 30KV 500pF
3x 20KV 500pF
2x 20KV 500pF

My plan is to build a reliable voltage multiplier (Villard Cascade), since I Also have HV diodes (14KV 3mA), unless someone gives me a better application idea.

Nice find!

If you make a multiplier with diodes, you have to be careful what you do with it. Putting out big sparks will likely kill the diodes pretty soon as the full discharge current will end up going through them. Also, you are limited to 14kv input, not the full 30kv of the caps.

Alternatively, make a marx generator. The only limit to the sparks is the capacitors :) That's what I did when I had a supply of big capacitors.

Hi buxtronix, I already built a marx generator:
150x150150x150150x150
Using disc capacitors. It provides some monster sparks, at the 22 Levels it has (2x11, it is a twin marx generator). Here is a video:

Regarding the Villard cascade, I was actually thinking of connecting the diodes in series and in parallel to increase their parameters. eg: Two in series would go up to 28KV.

use them to make your pfn for the thyratron

Hi TV,
wouldn't be a waste to use 30KV doorknobs when my thyratron goes up to 16KV only, not to mention that my HV supply used in the circuit only puts out 8KV?

I like your other suggestions regarding the Thyratron operation, if you have any other ideas feel free to share them with me, thanks.

the doorknobs have a low inductance and esr. for a 1-3us pulse have you checked the output of your thyratron circuit

not yet. but besides the pfn, what other ideas do you have?

If you're making a CW, I'd invest in bigger diodes.

With some bigger diodes you could build a powerful CW-multiplier. I recently built one with about 180kv output and hot arcs:

Dsc03093o

Best regards
