I have been requested to bring in a tesla chill to class for a teacher I had last year. It will be my large tesla coil which is my DRSSTC.
I was wounding what I can do for things to show off, with the coil. Obviously the glowing fluorescent light trick. But what else?
If the coil is sparking low power, if I hold a plasma globe or a regular glass light bulb, It will spark inside because my body is physically close to ground right? But I never did this and always wondered if it hurts to hold onto the metal screw of the bulb, and should I be grounded, OR will it be fine to just do it with regular shoes?
I just want to show tricks and cool things you could do with a tesla coil. It will be presented to a group of 15-18 year olds.

When i do the fluorescent light thing the arc will jump to my hand if it is close to the metal part of the bulb. Just an fyi. Wearing regular rubber soled shoes will not keep you from getting an arc to your body, and if you ground yourself you will be a magnet for them! A Faraday suit would protect you but you probably don't have one. Make sure whatever you do, you and the rest of the class are safe. Maybe one of the guys who does demos more than most can chime in and give you some pointers. My only real point is that you take safety into account for everyone in the room. Using a line filter in front of your coil may not be a bad idea either. You don't want to be responsible for any gadgets that get fried by any noise gone astray!
Edit: Heres something you can to try to see what i mean. Take a plasma globe, I am assuming you have one. Place a copper penny or other metal coin directly on top of it. Turn the globe on and move your finger closer and closer to the coin (very slowly) Do not worry, the little black burn on your finger will not kill you or hurt.
The same thing is what happens with the fluorescent tube and its metal cap.

Well things went good. The coil was loud and made 2 near by classes join so I was doing it with 50 people. Manage to do 52" sparks. Due to restricted time I was only able to demo FL lights. Even the one's 10ft up were glowing. But in the video you can see it arc the wood structure twice. Metal staple. We found it too was 50 inches away heh. That said I was not happy with the results. I had no time to tune and I had it set for my room. Close walls and ceiling. 76v did 4' using that same tap in a huge room, 120v did 4' horrible. First flash over too, due to horrible tune. Will get a tuned test Oct 22 at the lab with real video, not a phone video. Bad at showing sparks, they were a lot brighter.
