 		I somehow managed to stab my primary on my mot with a flathead screwdriver whilst attempting to fix it.... Now the primary is ruined, what should I do with it other than throw it away? I can't rewind another primary, I don't have any wire fit for the job.

 		The primary of a MOT is usually reasonably thick wire, it might be possible to do surgery and repair any shorted sections by cutting away the damaged area and soldering in new wire around any shorts or breaks, especially if the damage is only on the outer layer of the windings.

WireTronic inc, (wiretron.com) might give you a free sample long enough to do the whole thing.

copper plated aluminum wire is the worst.

 		you could use it as a ballast, while building my vttc this summer... I was drilling wholes for wires and my drill pushed through the cabinet and stabbed my filament transformer's (rewound mot) primary angry so then I had to make another one mad

 		Saw all of the remaining primary off and sell it for scrap copper, then put a dozen turns of heavy insulated wire on there as a new 12v primary. Et viola, a 12v to 2kV transformer needing only a 555 and a low voltage high current H bridge to drive it.

 		If the primary wire is solid copper then it might be worth salvaging. I've been using copper mot primary wire to make lots of beefy inductors and coils. If the wire is aluminum, then it would probably be best to just scrap it and look for another mot (the secondary could still be used as a ballast.)
