while playing around in my research lab, i've been making fluorescent plastic films on stuff by dissolving dye and solid polystyrene pellets into toluene, coating a surface with it, and allowing it to dry. makes a very nice, clear, removable from glass film that i thought might make a good insulator for windings. so i ran some tests on coils of wire and it seemed to work well and didn't attack the magnet wire's insulation. Searching around in the 4hv archives just now, i found the mention of an identical coating method using "Q-Dope" in a discussion of flyback construction. While it may not be new, it might be an idea worth revisiting. 1 part solid polystyrene to 2 parts toluene (by volume)

Interesting.
Wonder what it would do if mixed with silver nanoparticles? Might make a good surface for painting OLEDs or EL onto.
Also, polystyrene dissolves in acetone as well. This is also useful if you wanted to print out clear coatings for example to make etch resist on copper.

I've got a few other polymers that dissolve in alcohol and even water, but the polystyrene/toluene mix made the best looking finish. I can't imagine that I could get enough conducting particles between the insulating ones to make a decent conducting path.

If it an electrical insulator one thing to consider is what happens when it is subject to rapid temperature rise, like what happens when an ark fault develops in equipment connected to high energy sources, i.e. inside metal clad switchgear.
It was found in an investigation of damage to gear, far in excess of what could have been done by the electric source only, that the insulation had decomposed rapidly.
There is an IEEE paper on this if you can find it.
