Well today my dad brought me home a banged up playstation 2 he found in a dumpster. So I got to work trying to figure out what's wrong with it :D Unfortunately my O-scope does not arrive until next week so I only have a DMM at my disposal (for now). The unit does not power on (no fans run or lights turn on). So I took it apart and tested the power supply, and it works! the outputs are all normal but this means that it is the actual motherboard that is the problem.

I took the main board out and did a thorough search for blown components but I didn't find anything. Is it time to throw the board out or is there anything else I can do to find the problem? SMD soldering is out of the question for me so if it does happen to be a bad chip somewhere I can't do anything about it.

I did a quick search on ebay for replacement boards but the cheapest one I could find is $40

I can post pictures if need be

EDIT: Is this a sil-pad? if it is then doesn't it keep the chips warm because it's so thick instead of cooling them off? Link2

I wouldn't bother trying to fix it. It's a great console to have, but if the problem with yours isn't an obvious component, then you'll probably never be able to narrow down the problem. $40 for a new board is kind of pointless because you could get the whole system for that much (used.)
give it another search or two for fried or discolored components and loose or bad connections, and if you can't find anything, then start cannibalizing it.
if you decide to purchase a used console, make sure it's one of the newer, slim models.
oh and i guess another option could be to look for other broken PS2's for cheap and make a frankenstation.

Yeah I might look for really cheap consoles that at least turn on, in the meantime I am going to see how many amps the psu can provide

Ok so after I had it all completely apart I thought, "ah what the hell, i'll give it one more shot" so I hooked up the motherboard to the psu and also to the fan and the part that lights up. And everything turned on?!? I couldn't believe it so I put it all back together and hooked it up to the tv. And sure enough, I now have a working PS2 that originated from a dumpster. below is a picture of it running, I threw out the case because it was trashed from being in the elements, it lived through who knows how much rain and stuff.

I logged about 30 minutes on ratchet and clank. I already have a PS2 and a PS3 so I will see if I can sell this one
