Battery Charging

Well, I blew up my SMP by putting a 60,000uF cap on it and I want to just put a lead acid battery on my next one. Is there anything special I need to do or should I just add a diode(prevent back feed), resistor and set the voltage to 14.5V(.7V over 13.8)? It will probably be a lawn tractor battery.

Whatever your load throws back at it, your lead acid battery will just laugh and ask for more. If there's a diode it the way, it may kill the diode!

Current will not flow from the + terminal of your battery into the + terminal of the SMP unless the battery is at a higher voltage than the SMP output.

you can add a relay switch, connect the coil to the charger so when the power is off it disconnect the battery from charger

I have thought about that. Will it be fast enough to prevent damage? I want to charge it with a computer powersupply.

well, if that doesn't work you can always use a beefy diode or get a few diodes in parallel so it can handle the current.

What's the worst that could happen? If the bus is already designed for whatever voltage, what could happen to it if the battery applied that voltage or less? I could see problems occurring if you connected a super high voltage battery to a PSU low voltage output, but if you're using the PSU to charge the battery, it follows that the battery's voltage is limited to whatever the PSU is designed to supply.

I've often had a big electrolytic capacitor across my PSU output, and nothing happened to the PSU when I turned it off.
