Hi, last week I've got some parts from 6kW HV powersupply. I am curious about theese big caps, i've never seen anything like it before, its a 220uF/300VDC film caps Link2 they were connected like its on circuit. What for is this topology good for? How can i use theese caps, in TCs? like a decoupling caps? etc...
thx
-Martin

They make good low-inductance buscap, I think.
They are not meant for tank circuits; no ripple handling capabilities.

I would call 150A RMS current fairly meaty.

I would call that statement fairly true smile

They are made for very high ripple current (that is the 150 amp rating), but they are made for DC, so aren't suitable for anything that will pass AC through them such as a tank circuit. However they would indeed make really awesome decoupling caps like in that schematic, though i'm sure it is still a good idea to use another decoupling cap of a lower value directly across the terminals of the bridge. Due to the size of those capacitors and how they are mounted there is bound to be some stray inductance between them and a bridge. The typical low ESR/ESL poly cap on the bridge will take care of that.

Doesn't the ripple current flow through them, then?

I saw in the datasheet that the capacitor was designed for DC filtering operation, but as it is not polarised, I can only imagine that it might have to be de-rated for AC use, having regard to dielectric and ohmic losses, hot spot calculation, and so on. Link2

If you're thinking about using them for reactive power handling, I would advise against it.
220 uF is a lot of capacitance for such a small film cap; the big snubbing versions of those are about the same size, and only ~5 uF.
