Solenoid driver circuits

Hello All,

I am starting to build a solenoid driven gear shift for my R1 engine which is in my mini. Anyone know of a good circuit for such a thing please. I am assuming the biggest factor will be freewheel diodes for emf from solenoid coils?

Any pointers to good sites or further reading much appreciated

Hi Colin.

Sounds like the 'electromagnetic projectile accelerator' forum here would be a good place to start.

I assume you've tried starter motor solenoids already?

Have you also considered an air shifter?

Hi Ash,

Long time no see! I have bought some solenoids from RS. Just looking at driver circuit for them. i think just an IGBT based driver should be fine and as 12V no high side isolation to worry about.

What current are they rated for?

What's the drive line configuration (not relevant to this thread, I'm just interested.)

Hi Ash,

Cant remember current rating as need to dig them back out. Basicaaly they will rive the gear selection shaft up or down to selct gear on motorcycle engine. i have figured i will need 2 for this due to direction changes.

Yep, one for changing up, and one for changing down. Sequential gearbox. What about selecting neutral?

I'd use big BJT's (eg. BUP49, 90Amp, gain of 15 minimum, so around 5 amps base current, good for 80 volts, so should handle any transient voltages (I think)), having a paddle change on a mini should be cool, one paddle for up, the other for down, mounted on the back of the steering wheel.

But then I like to keep it simple.

(Get another solenoid for the clutch, use another transistor to cut the ignition)

I think commercial kits use time to reduce stroke for neutral. I will mock up a driver and test later today if I get time using 555 timer for single shot at varying pulse length
