hey guys
i just picked up a power supply from ebay, apple 614-0037, 68W for $1.80. it was just going to be for parts but upon looking at it, it seems pretty robust (larger capacitor and transformer than any atx i've seen) so i want to try powering it up as an auxiliary bench supply. it only has two IC's, an LM339 quad comparator and a KA3842B smps controller. I need to trick the thing into starting up without a computer.
should i look toward the comparator or the smps controller? there's a small 6 pin input that is probably the key to operation, would it be better to start shorting pins, grounding them, or powering them?
i know this description is pretty vague, and i don't expect anyone to think about it too hard. i just figured there might be some common procedures for figuring out how to power these things that someone may have figured out.
if not, i'll either have to tediously trace out the entire schematic and figure it out, or just desolder it for parts.

This supply seems to be an AT supply, but i cannot find any pictures other than thumbnails, so could you tell us what wire colors there are other than red, yellow, black and orange? If there is a green wire then ground it.
Have you tried to see if it will run? It will need a load resistor on the 5v or 3.3v rail to regulate properly. If it wont run without a computer connected even with a load resistor, there must be some wire that needs to be either held high or held to ground (most likely ground).

yea that's where the tricky part comes in. it just has red, black, and yellow output wires, and a 6 pin input that i don't have the input cable for. i tried powering it up with a load resistor and it didn't work, so i'm sure i've got to do something with the 6 pin input. fortunately, i just noticed, that two of the pins aren't connected to anything, so i've only got 4 to worry about. i'll try holding each one to ground and see if it works.
edit: found the right pin (needed the 5v line connected to it) thanks for the input guys
