just pulled them out of a big enclosure from sort of lighting system. it contained just the 3 autotransformers and 3 10.5uF 520 vac capacitors. label information reads:
ballastronix inc. 78-21-1385 BD 120 V 1.90 A hpf 320 OCV 60HZ Autotransformer Lamps(1) MH/MV 175W M-57/ H-39 L97
seems to be a 230 to 120 vac step down. can't think of anything to do with them.

Most likely a high reactance autotransformer ballasts for high pressure lamps, you can use them as ballasts for your projects (either by taking the 320 volt no-load output, or by shorting the outputs and using the primaries in the same fashion as shorted secondary MOTs).

no they're not variable, sorry. just a big transformer that uses a single winding. i was gonna look into the cost for shipping them and maybe put them in the junkbox for ~$10+shipping.
