after shopping around for ferrite cores online, i realized i have massive chunks of it on the shelf. would it be possible to wind a transformer or large inductor on the ferrite "funnel" that surrounds the electron gun at the back of a crt? well, of course it is possible, but i mean: would the conical shape be poor for a transformer because of the different magnetic path lengths around the core?

Yes, you may use a television deflection yoke ferrite core to construct a high frequency transformer. Make sure that both halves are used, and that they are mated flush with each other (no air gaps), unless you intentionally desire a gapped transformer (which are also useful for some applications).
These deflection yoke cores also make nice cores to wrap cables through for common mode RF suppression (common mode choke).
