Hi all. Did anyone else see the article about implantable flexible memristors using GaIn liquid metal and polymers?
Its on the IEEE Spectrum page if that helps.
Are we going to hit Singularity on 21-12-2012 maybe? It would take a lot of breakthroughs but we are already making 20nm chips so its only a matter of time before some enterprising company makes a 3-D neural network using memristor technology.
BTW its not all bad news, imagine no more car accidents, ever once these advanced driving computers make it into cars. AI could react 100 times as fast as a human and even calculate how to reduce injury in the event a collision is inevitable.
Not to mention the possibility of implanting advanced learning machines into say, Alzheimers patients to copy and store the remaining neural patterns in a permanent form so the damage can be halted in its tracks.
Locked in syndrome could be a thing of the past, thank $Deity.

With the ability (if not commercial practicality) to build 3D structures atom by atom I'm sure computing density has a long way to go.
The one thing that I am sure of is that all electronics fail eventually and software can be corrupted (usually accidentally by programmers, often maliciously by virus/trojan etc. or simply 'hacked') Maintaining inter-operability between a multitude of interconnected computing nodes, each with their own developers is a nightmare (I was responsible for this for a fleet of trains here in uk so I know)
Even given the above problems I have more faith in well designed/implemented electronic control systems than biological ones, humans are so un-reliable in practice. (including myself)
Can we now make reliable connections between electronics and the human nervous system? I haven't seen any reports a of long term reliable interface.
If a practical interface was available, would you want it? I would for a while, but the threat of my brain being 'hacked' by malware or more likely Government agencies is worrying to say the least. I don't trust ANY government with my privacy.
Don't get me started on the topic of 'singularity' WHY should r=0 ? of course the math fails, how could it not? I don't care which 'brane' you live on, if something has a radius of zero it doesn't exist....by definition. So you can stuff your singularity up your black hole.
