Heh, figures. Wonder if someone should use this method but with some solder paste mixed with a UV absorbing fluid to make a very effective way to solder SMD parts "on the fly" ?
I take back what I said about these diodes, they DO have legitimate research applications IF used safely and with the proper precautions such as indirect i.e. webcam in opaque glove box.

Looks like the solder reflects a lot of the laser light - means it would be a bit dangerous to do by hand. Also to get a good joint the pads on the board and component both need to be heated up to the same temp as the solder, otherwise you get a cold joint.
I'm sure it could be done but is it any better than a hot air station aside from the "ooh, laser!" factor?

If you used laser goggles that would end the problem of laser light, however, I think the laser would melt other parts on the board as the laser doesn't have a small tip

False. Unless you are using parts with leads on the order of the wavelength of light, I'm sure something could be managed (although this may require an unpleasantly expensive laser!) Coherent markets laser soldering machines...but at Mattski said, COMPLETE OVERKILL.
